In May I got a Depo-Provera shot, and a week after that shot I began bleeding. I waited about 3 weeks to see my PCP, and she prescribed me Premarin .03mg, 2 pills a day for 7 days along with 3 pills of Motrin. This did not stop the bleeding, so she said to get another shot of Depo-Provera. This made the bleeding worse. I went back in and was given 10mg Provera for 10 days and the bleeding has yet to stop. I can't get in to see my PCP for a few more weeks, can you tell me why all these pills have yet to stop the bleeding?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD (doctor) on Tue 22, Jul 2008 11:34pm:

Hi there. These hormonal shots are really aimed to synchronize the female hormones and eventually promote regularity in menses. However, what you are experiencing may be an unwanted side effect of these drugs or there may be other problems with the uterus that needs to be evaluated. It is best that you do not wait for a few more weeks before addressing this problem, since the more blood you loose, the weaker you may become and that would necessitate blood transfusions. A consult with your gynecologist is recommended, and probably have your urterus assessed through a transvaginal ultrasound. Regards.
