Bronchial tube cancer / liver

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 48; Ovarian Cancer previously/Now Cancer in the bronchial tubes and liver; Relevant drugs:Radiation/chemo ) on Fri 26, Dec 2008 11:28pm :

Hi, I have a friend who has had ovarian cancer 10 years ago. Has been cancer free (so we thought) since then...she does get checked on a regular bases (blood test) I believe. Just recently she had a cough she could not get rid of. Went to the doctor and had a chest x-ray and I think they gave her antibiotics thinking it may have been pneunomia, but when she returned to the doctors they did another x-ray to find nothing had changed. They looked into it further and found she has cancer in her bronchial tubes and in her liver. She is currently receiving radiation treatments and will start chemo next week. Tell me what I should expect with this situation at hand. I do have a friend who runs a cancer support group that I think will be mentally helpful...but what should I be ready for?

Hi, Thanks for writing in. I am afraid your friend is suffering from Stage 4 ovarian cancer which is a very advanced stage where the cancer spreads to extra-abdominal organs like lungs. This stage carries a poor prognosis. On an average 5 year survival rate is about 35%-39% for advanced stage of ovaran cancer. The general health of patient, treating doctor, and treatment regimen and response to treatment are the major determining factors. Hope this helps!
