Ciprofloxacin and Late Period Question

	I was recently on Ciprofloxacin, 500 mg, twice a day for two weeks, for a case of severe bronchitis. My last dosage was about 10 days ago. However, this month, my period is now five days late. This is unusual for me, my period is usually only a couple of days late at most. I am sexually active, but we do use condoms and I did take a pregnancy test, which tested negative. Could the Ciprofloxacin actually have made my period late or make me miss it? Should I be concerned?

Since you have had protected sex and now have delayed periods, your question is very valid and a natural cause of concern for you. If you have been sick with bronchitis for close to two weeks and have been on an antibiotic for that period of time, then both prolonged illness and antibiotic intake can delay periods. Illness is a time of stress and strain for the body and results in release of certain hormones or chemicals which help body fight infection. These chemicals disrupt the normal pituitary-ovarian axis and can thus delay periods. Similarly antibiotics cause a chain of reaction in the body, aimed at killing the organism causing infection, and contribute to stress and strain. If the pregnancy test is negative, then in all probability you are not pregnant. The only word of caution I would like to add is that condoms can leak or rupture. Hence chances of pregnancy are always there in a case of delayed periods. In your case it is most likely due to prolonged illness and antibiotic intake. If you do not get your periods in a week or 10 days time, get a blood pregnancy test for confirmation. If it is negative then the periods may come any time. However if they do not come within 15 days consult a gynecologist to rule out other causes of delayed periods such as hypothyroidism, PCOS, anemia etc. Take a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Eat healthy. Take plenty of soups etc. Take a multivitamin pill. All these will help you bounce back to life after a prolonged illness. Also they will help regulate your menstrual cycle.
