Continuous hot flashes and night sweats, (never stop) depleted hormones, low thyroid

Asked by rbcttlmn (Female; 56; Healthy, normal weight, very acttive, until menopause. Then symptoms developed.; Relevant drugs:None ) on Fri 24, Apr 2009 03:24pm :

Had last period three years ago. Hard time with mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats and weight gain. Have tried hormone replacement, nothing works. Some things even intensify my symptoms. Hot flashes and night sweats so bad that I can't sleep and have trouble doing anything. They make me very agitated. Hot flash (which are pretty much non-stop) make me feel like I am going to crawl out of my skin. Hormones are totally depleeted. I have talked to a couple of doctors, no help. Doesn't seem normal that the more time goes by, symptoms get worse. Is this normal? Should I be pushing my doctor for additional tests? No energy and muscle definition and strength is totally gone. Doctor did do some blood work. Put me on a very low dose of thyroid medication. Feel like I am on fire most of the time, hands and feet tingle. Any help? Thank you. Jeri Havens.

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Sat 25, Jul 2009 06:52am:

Your symptoms are very suggestive of menopausal syndrome. It will help us to know for how long you took HRT therapy. Menopausal symptoms respond to HRT. Thyroid disease is also a possibility.I would suggest you to get a complete endocrinological exam done by a specialist. Thanks
