Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been having upper right side abdomen pain near ribs in front and sometimes on the side for 7 weeks. My brief gastro history is as follows: 16 months ago I had a CT scan of abdomen to check for possible hernia (nothing found). June 2009 I had a colonoscopy and endosopy found very bad acid reflux and bleeding hemmoriods. Around the same time I also had minor upper side pain, doctor ordered ultrasound of abdomen July 09 was clean. Pain seemed to go away for awhile came back 7 weeks ago seems to be getting a little worse and now i have lower pain near pelvis the pain is mostly a burning type. Doctor did a blood test 6 weeks ago blood levels white, red, liver and pancreas functions etc normal...doctor kept feeling issue was muscular etc due to the fact that I have had these tests, most of them recent but I am going for an MRI of abdomen today and I am terrified I have pancreas or liver cancer.. on the positive side no weight loss, no loss apettite, skin not changing color or itchy. please let me know what you think, thanks

Hi, Welcome to the forum. Your symptoms could be due to several possible causes - this could be a muscle pull, urinary tract infection, a prostate infection etc. It is not likely to be cancer due to the fact that you do not have the symptoms you know are associated with cancer. It is good to get an MRI done to rule out any other intrabdominal cause. Till then drink plenty of water, avoid tea, coffee, alcohol and smoking. Maintain good personal hygiene and wear loose comfortable clothes. Also, avoid sexual intercourse or any sexual activities till you see your doctor. You should eat frequent light meals, preferably every 2 hours, eat 3 -4 helpings of fresh fruits, avoid spicy processed foods. You could try some warm compresses, rest, oral pain relief medications like paracetamol and local application of diclofenac gel and see if it helps with your symptoms. Also, stress and anxiety could be major contributors to the symptoms you are having. So - it would be ebst to avoid stress, anxiety and also sleep well. You should take the prescribed medications for your acid reflux - proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole, pantoprazole and esmoprazole would be best. For the hemorrhoids - you could try eating a high-fiber diet, using stool softener, taking pain killer and having a sitz bath for your symptoms. Apply calamine lotion at the site, keep the area clean and well moisturized, wear lose, comfortable clothes and maintain good personal hygiene. Talk to your doctor if you need surgery. Let us know if you need any further information. Regards.

Hello, Welcome to the forum. I agree with Dr Bhumika that since you are not having any symptom of GI malignancy, so chances of these symptoms being due to malignancy are very less. The tips that have been explained by her are very good and surely going to help you out. Since the CT scans had come out clean , so any pathology like gall bladder inflammation, stones, liver pathology and lung pathology have been ruled out. It can be due to musculoskeletal pain. Irritation of the nerves supplying this area can also cause pain. Irritation can be due to nerve compression or pinching due to any spine related pathology. Wait for the MRI report and if it comes normal, discuss these options also with your treating physician. I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
