Do I have genital herpes or can this be related to my autoimmune diseases?

	I have these lesions, bumps, etc in my pubic region, thighs, abdomen, armpits, breasts, waistline. I have an anal abscess I think as well as painful skin eruptions in the anal area. Some of these do have a liquid discharge. Some have a very solid material that comes out--very solid. They started about a year ago.

	Answer by VanessaMD (doctor) on Mon 04, Aug 2008 07:30am: Hi Autoimmune diseases are systemic diseases, that is they involve several tissues of the body including the skin. The presence of an autoimmune disease may lead to dryness of the skin. Skin when dry becomes more susceptible to irritation. Dry skin my lead to an itch scratch cycle which can eventually cause eczematous skin conditions. Another differential for your case will be folliculitis, boils or furuncles. These bumps on the skin are caused by a bacterial infection. Staphyloccocus is the main causative agent. These bumps may be contagious. They need to be covered and topical as well as oral antibiotics are needed. As for the anal bumps, we have to rule out an anal fistula here. If this has been present for quite some time already ,then you may need a consult with a surgeon to have these assessed to make sure that the bumps are not caused by underlying structural problems . Thus, a thorough physical examination is necessary. Your skin condition may be associated with the underlying autoimmune disease however indirectly. On the other hand, they may also be separate conditions altogether.
