Fibrocystic breast changes present as "lumpy bumpy" breasts. This entity was earlier called
"fibrocystic breast disease", but was the word "disease" was replaced by
"change" as it was found to occur in many normal women with no increased tendency to breast cancer.
Fibrocystic breast change is classified as a "nonproloferative" breast condition by pathologists.
Although it does not cause increased risk of breast cancer, it does make interpretation of breast cancer
screening tests difficult.
Sclerosing adenosis is classified as a "proliferative" breast disease by pathologists. It causes an
increase in the number of cells in a part of the breast called "lobules", and results in a slightly
increased risk of invasive breast cancer (relative risk of 1.5 to 2).
Microcalcifications are mammogram findings, and may be seen in benign conditions and cancer. The size, amount,
and pattern of microcalcifications gives a clue to the underlying condition.
The landmark "Womens Health Initiative" study clearly proved a slightly increased risk of breast
cancer in women who took hormonal products.
I suggest that you undergo regular screening tests, and not worry unduly!
