About 10 mo.s ago I noticed fluttering in my chest (like a butterfly in your throat)lasting only seconds. Usually while I am sitting and relaxing. This would happen just occationally and not during phisical activity. As time goes on these episodes of fluttering are becoming more frequent. I notice when laying on my left side, if I get this fluttering, if I move to any other position the fluttering will stop. 3 days ago I was having episodes of this futterring throughout the day until they were almost continuous. I even awoke 5-7 times during the night with this fluttering and for the first time I noticed something else happening during and only during the actual fluttering. I had the feeling of the blood vessels in my head throbbing(like when you are turned upside down for along period of time)and a sudden slight heat flash. I do not have any pain associated with this. About 9 mo.s ago at gyno. appt I brought this to my Gyno Dr.s attention and she ordered a blood test for hormone and an EKG all test were fine. I am 40 years old 5'5', 113lbs. and in generally good condition. Also I don't know if this has any thing to do with this problem but starting at about the same time I have been getting this pain underneath my right shoulder blade. I have only noticed it when laying down no matter what position. The pain is hard to describe a somewhat duel, ache and constant. Movement doesn't help. It will last a few minutes sometime. Sometimes 15 or 20 minutes. Should I be concerned?

Hi For fluttering or palpitations, then differentials will include cardiac or thyroid problems. Your physician was thinking along this line thus, the request for hormone levels and the EKG. The results of the tests as you have mentioned were normal. At this point, we should not be very worried. However, for the sake of being thorough and also to ease your worries, I would suggest a referral or a consult with a cardiovascular specialist. Further evaluation of the heart through 2D echo to visualize cardiac muscles and a stress test may be necessary. Also, you have noted of right shoulder pain. I would suggest an ultrasound of the gallbladder just to rule out gallstones. Though you are quite slim based on your height and weight, gallstones may present with right sided pain associated with abdominal pain and a sensation of fullness. Females above 40 years of age and who are overweight are at risk for gallstone formation. Get some time to relax. When the palpitations happen, take a deep breath and calm yourself. Being anxious may aggravate the condition. Also, try to determine if this is associated with menses or food intake.
