Gastrointestinal issues: loose bowel movements, frequently after meals, gas, yellowish stools for about a year.

Asked by Unregistered (Male; 36; USA; No major health issues, no other conditions except lactose intolerance ; Relevant drugs:None ) on Thu 07, Aug 2008 07:23am :

My husband has had gastrointestinal problems for nearly a year now. He has a lot of gas, loose stools, sometimes has to have a bowel movement frequently, especially after meals and recently the color has turned to a yellowish color. He is an otherwise healthy 36 year old, exercises frequently and eats a balanced diet, with no other medical issues. We have determined that he has become lactose intolerant, and have adjusted his diet for that. He has also tried avoiding different foods to try to find out if a certain food is causing this issue. So far, he has not found any foods that are causing the problem. He went to the doctor once for the problem, but they said to avoid green tea, which did not fix the problem. I am concerned that he perhaps picked up the giardia parasite on one of his trips. He's outdoors a lot, and has traveled all over the US. He's been in Mexico and got traveler's diarrhea, but that was over 2 years ago and it cleared up. When he mentioned it to the doctor that he thought it might be that, she dismissed it. We are concerned that he won't get diagnosed right, and concerned that it could be a number of different things, from celiac disease to giardia, to IBS.

Hi I do understand your concern. You have noted that your husband experiences changes in bowel movement patterns, is this correct? There are some salient factors that you have also pointed out such as history of travel which may increase the likelihood that this may be infectious in origin. If the symptoms occur only after travel, then an infectious origin becomes likely. To be thorough, we may request for a colonoscopy just to evaluate the intestines. We need to rule out any structural or anatomical changes within the intestines. To rule out an infection, we may request for microscopic evaluation of your husband’s stools. A stool guaiac test to rule out occult bleeding as well as a microscopic evaluation by an experienced technician may be able to shed some light on the diagnosis. If ELISA and immunofluorescent techniques are available, then giardiasis may be determined. Gastric allergies, anxiety, and certain medications may affect bowel movement. It is necessary to note possible triggers such as milk, cream , eggs and other possible triggers that may be causing this.
