How can I get rid of my fibocystic breast lump?

Asked by bru62 (Female; 22; USA; 2 abortions; Relevant drugs:natural progesterone, primrose oil ) on Thu 18, Sep 2008 12:23am :

These things may have some relevance: I had 2 abortions in 2007 due to hurtful circumstances and I have taken plan b three times before. I was also on birth control before (Femcon Fe)...I'm not promiscuous and started having sex at the age of 20. I have always worn a bra and never taken it off except in the shower. until now when I notice a lump in my right breast. My fiance says he's noticed it before now and it gets bigger before my period and smaller after. The only difference is i can move it around and stuff. I got it checked out and the doctor said it was fibrocystic changes. I stopped taking birth control for fear of the hormones causing problems. I tried natural progesterone but i stopped because I saw little change. I started taking primrose oil because i heard it could help but so far no difference. I'm thinking of taking sea kelp. Would this work? If not, what's a natural way to get rid of this lump? I've heard there can be complications if i get it surgically removed. I have been avoiding chocolate and caffiene and I have stopped wearing a bra as much (only when i need to at work). I also try not to use too much deoderant. I've basically tried everything I hear of that can help. Please help me. What should I do?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Thu 18, Sep 2008 09:08am:

Hi, How are you? Fibrocytic changes in the breast may lead to formation of lump in the breast. This lump is benign and has no relation with breast cancer. The lumps occur due to fluctuations in the level of estrogens and progesterone. They usually enlarge at the time of menstruation and decrease afterwards. It is believed that avoiding caffeine, soft drinks, tea, chocolate decrease water retention and thus reduces the lump. Application of heat, wearing a bra, aspirin and Danazol which is a synthetic form of androgen help in mitigating the symptoms. You can discuss this with your OBGYN and continue with your trial and errors to find out ways to reduce the swelling.
