I had mild cervical changes due to hpv, and I have had oral sex, does this mean I am going to get throat cancer? I can not get any clear answers from doctors, and the internet futher adds to the confusion and myths.

Asked by Unregistered 026; HPV ) on Tue 29, Jul 2008 06:26pm :

I had mild dysplasia, caused by hpv. I was raped 3 months after treatment, both vaginal and anal. I am now scared that I will get anal cancer. I am in a small town, and the doctors do not even believe that hpv causes throat or anal cancers. Does everyone with Hpv 16 in the anal or throat get cancer? I am so confused. I have had hpv for 7 years. I have had a daughter and got married. I had a doctor check me and he said I had some small polps, but that there is nothing else. I don't know who or what to believe. There is so much confusion over Hpv even among the doctors I have seen. I am scared for my husband and myself. It was 5 years when I was rapped. I don't know if it is to late. All the sites I have found tell people how to avoid getting HPV, but it is to late for most people, even if they don't know it yet. Are the people who already have HPV, and who have had oral sex all going to get throat cancer?

Hi, I can understand the pain you have undergone over the years due to the assault. I will try to answer some of your questions here and will also any other that you may post later. Human papilloma virus has about 60 types of viruses in the group. Not all are cancerous and there some which have been found to have been associated with cancers. the degreee of association varies and nearly all cervical cancer may be caused with HPV infection. However, other cancers may have only a part being HPV induced and the others clearly not induced by these at all. You may read and see the figures at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_papillomavirus to understand my point better. Its not too late if you are aware and get yourself examined periodically for any development of lesions. Not all the people who are infected, develop lesions and not all lesions progress to cancer. I hope you understand. Let me know if I would have missed something or if you need further information
