Hi, i have had thrush on and off for last couple years but usually i notice it when sex becomes painful. But recently i noticed a very red and sore rash outside my vagina. It looks a little swollen & raw and very uncomfortable. I went to my dotoor who presribed a diflucan tablet and canesten cream. I took them, but still a week later its no better. could it be something else? thanks

Answer by Unregistered (doctor) on Mon 28, Jul 2008 11:56pm:

Hi, Vaginal thrush, also known as vulvovaginal candidiasis, is a yeast infection caused by the candida species of fungus, usually Candida albicans. It is referred to as vulvovaginal because it can infect the female groin area as well as the vagina, which explains why it has occurred outside the vagina, this time around. The infection commonly causes irritation and swelling of the vagina and vulva. Candida albicans is also normally found in the vaginas of women who do not have thrush because there are certain fungi which live on the human body and do not cause an infection until the natural balance is upset. This happens in the case of diabetics, antibiotic medication, stress and hormonal changes, to name a few conditions. The symptoms are as you have described. If the symptoms are more severe, you will need to take the treatment for longer. If your symptoms have not improved within 7-14 days, you should visit your GP. There are also a number of other things that you can do to help ease the problem. These include washing the area with plain water (avoid soaps), do not wear tight-fitting and synthetic clothing, try and wear cotton panties. ref:http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=87&sectionId=11
