Answer by Dr Smitha M, MD (doctor) on Tue 12, Aug 2008 10:38pm:

Hi, Conceiving after IUD removal depends on several factors. These include the type of IUD that was used, the age of the woman at the time the IUD was removed, regularity and cyclicity of menstrual cycles, etc. If there are no other problems with reference to menstrual cycles, then conception can occur about 3 months from the time the IUD has been removed. This is an average duration of time that has been noted in research studies and there will be some individual variation in this regard as some individuals can get pregnant right away and others can take longer. If planning on becoming pregnant, ensure that you optimize your micronutrient levels in advance as this will aid better neural development. These include folic acid, iron, vitamins A, B complex, C, and E, calcium, etc. It would be ideal if you can get your daily requirement from your diet. Additionally, have any infections treated and minor problems requiring medical or surgical intervention attended to. Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress. regards,
