Stomach problems

Asked by Unregistered (Female ) on Thu 02, Oct 2008 07:18am :

Dear doctors, Ihave had allergies or rashes of some sort for about nine years or longer.Blisters on hands, red bumps on legs. these itch terribly, turn into staph infections from scratching. Now I break out all over, lots of different looking rashes.I've been told latex allergies,to other kinds of dermatitis. The latest trip to an allergist said formaldehyde 1% (aq.)and quaternium 15 2%. Which I'm told is basicly anything that touches the skin. I get really tired, don't know if this is a medical symptom or a tired of living like this with no solution kinda tired. Since this started so long ago didn't link it to stomach problem, but maybe, huh. What am I to do?

Hello, How are you? Your symptoms are suggestive of eczema. It is a form of dermatitis or inflammation of the epidermis. The blisters that you are having on your hands are due to dyshidrotic eczema. Dyshidrotic eczema appears as intensely itchy blisters on the hands, fingers and soles of the feet. When it affects the hands it’s called cheiropompholyx. Cause of eczema is genetic and related to atopic dermatitis but eczema may be set off by extreme temperatures, stress, sweating, medication, clothing (especially wool or silk), grease, oils, soap and detergents, and environmental allergens. Dryness is perhaps the most important trigger. Drying soaps should be avoided, and the skin should be moisturized frequently.Stomach problems are rarely a trigger. There is no cure for eczema, but there are a number of ways to relieve it.Application of corticosteroid creams is helpful.Oral antihistaminics like benadryl or Claritin are useful in itch control and sometimes oral steroids are prescribed. Topical immunomodulators are relatively new drugs available for use in treating atopic eczema. Patients with severe eczema may benefit from phototherapy (light treatment). Of all these methods prevention of the allergen which triggers eczema is the best.I feel that you should get allergy testing done from an allergy specialist to find out the allergens in your case.Blood tests like RAST can also be helpful. Then keeping your skin moisturized will also help. You can find more information about this on : http://www.internationaleczema-psoriasisfoundation.org/dyshidrotic_eczema.php4 Pls discuss these options of treatment with your dermatologist Hope it helps. Take care and pls do keep me posted if you have any additional queries.
