Hi,
Although, hormonal contraceptives both in the form of the oral pills as well as the patch have been linked
with the weight gain but till now there hasn¡¦t been a conclusive relationship between them. It
has been theorized that the weight gain might occur due to the following 3 reasons.
ľ Fluid retention or bloating
ľ Increased muscle (because muscle is heavier than other tissue)
ľ Deposits of fat
Estrogen used in hormonal contraceptives could hypothetically lead to fluid retention and increased fat.
Combined contraceptives could affect women's appetites, which might make them eat more. Some hormones
could increase muscle mass, but this is most unlikely to be an effect of contraceptives.
Till now, the conclusion drawn from the various clinical trials doesn¡¦t suggest any significant
relationship between contraceptives and weight again but this conclusion does not rule out that individual
people will not gain weight.
Hence, I don¡¦t think you need to worry about weight gain if you want to use the patch but in
case you do tend to put on then you can ask your gynecologist to change the hormonal preparation which may be
helpful.
I sincerely hope that helps. Please do keep me posted.
Best Regards.
