can hyperthermia be caused by swimming?

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 34; 1 child; Relevant drugs:Depo Pavera ) on Sun 28, Sep 2008 05:08pm :

I've had a low grade fever of 99.1-99.4 for a few days now. I am a little sore from changing my exercise routine, other than that I feel fine. No pain, no vomiting, no change in appetite or energy level, no rash, no swelling or cough, or anything else I can think of. The only change in my routine is that I have started swimming and doing yoga for exercise instead of using the gym. Could exercising (approx 45min/day) in the cool (84deg) pool water be the cause of my prolonged hyperthermia?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD (doctor) on Sun 28, Sep 2008 07:47pm:

Hi there. While during the exercise routines in a cold environment would cause some form of lowering of the body temperature, there can indeed be some form of a 'rebound' after the exercise causing some form of elevation of body temperature. During exercise, your body naturally generates heat. You cannot feel this during immersion in cold environment. However, after the exercise and you remove the cold environment, the elevation of temperature is then felt. If this persist then it would be recommended to review your exercise routine and have yourself checked by your doctor as well. Regards.
