Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Fri 29, Aug 2008 06:08am:

Hello, The term multifollicular or multicystic ovary is applied in the incidence of 6 or more follicles (small sacs containing the ovum), each with a diameter of 4 – 8 mm which can even expand to 10 mm in cases of exception, whereas a normal ovary will show one, at the most two fully developed follicles. A clear distinction should be made between this condition and polycystic ovaries, where the patient will also show hormonal changes as well as changes in her metabolism. As a rule, multifollicular ovaries do not require treatment, the more so as they do not involve any far-reaching changes in hormone levels. There is no influence on the levels of lipids (cholesterol, triglyceride), or the glucose and insulin levels as is present in PCOS. http://www.ferticon.de/text.php3?artikel=8&seq=2&la=en To differentiate it from PCOS.you can get tests like 2 hr GTT,serum androgen and testosterone levels,LH-FSH ratio, prolactin levels,TSH levels,17-hydroxyprogesterone levels and 3D ultrasound done.3 D ultrasound is the golden test for diagnosing PCOS.All these tests will be normal in multifollicular ovary but not so in PCOS. Hope it helps. Take care and pls do keep us posted if you want any more information.
