Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Thu 02, Oct 2008 06:24am:

Hello Michelle, How are you now? Your symptoms are typically suggestive of laryngitis. Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. It causes hoarse voice or the complete loss of the voice because of irritation to the vocal folds (vocal cords). If it lasts for a few days,it is acute and if it lasts for more than 6 weeks,it is chronic laryngitis.caused by either viral or bacterial infections, smoking or alcohol use, excessive coughing and overuse of vocal cords thus causing their inflammation. If caused dye to infection(mostly viral),a dry, sore throat may be accompanied by voice loss, cold, fever, coughing, swollen lymph nodes and difficulty in swallowing. Treatment includes complete voice rest(avoid talking even in whispers),using a humidifier and sucking lozenges. If bacterial infection is suspected, then antibiotics are needed. For this you need to consult an ENT specialist. Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted if you have any additional queries.
