irregular menstrual cycle for 40 year old woman who gradually loss weight

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 40; none; Relevant drugs:no Rx only multi-vitamins ) on Sun 20, Jul 2008 09:42am :

why would loosing weight causes irregular menstrual cycle? I did not loose weight dramatically. I have always weighed between 130 -140 but starting 2yrs ago, I began the NO Carb diet and I have maintained this diet with very little carb. I now reached my healthy weight of 118 - 120. I am 4'11 and I just turned 40 on 4/20/08. My normal menstrual cycle usually last a period of 3 - 4 days. this is the first time I have my menstrual cycle lasting little more than two weeks. My cycle started 7/7/08 and ended 7/14/08; stopped 7/7/14 and 7/15; restarted 7/16/08 to now but the bleed is not heavy.

Hi, Menorrhagia is the medical term for excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding — and for periods that are both heavy and prolonged. The condition is also known as hypermenorrhea. Heavy menstrual bleeding is a common concern among premenopausal women, you could fall into this category because of your age. In a normal menstrual cycle, a balance between the hormones estrogen and progesterone regulates the buildup of the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which is shed during menstruation. If a hormonal imbalance occurs, the endometrium develops in excess and eventually sheds by way of heavy menstrual bleeding. Hormonal imbalance occurs most often in adolescent girls and in women approaching menopause. Apart from this there are certain medical conditions which can cause menorrhagia like Uterine fibroids, Polyps, Adenomyosis, Cancer and some drugs like anti-inflammatory medications and anti-coagulants(prevent blood clotting). Since this is just the first abnormal cycle you have had it is too early to come to a definite conclusion. You will need to schedule an appointment with your doctor and be certain to show the record of the bleeding as it occurs occurs during the month. After a a physical exam you may be asked to get the following done-Blood tests, Pap test, Endometrial biopsy and an Ultrasound scan. Depending on the results obtained further management(other investigations and treatment)will follow. If menorrhagia is caused by a specific hormonal imbalance, such as thyroid disease, the heavy menstrual flow often can be controlled with hormone medications. Your new diet could have something to do with this only if it has altered your hormonal balance or related to thyroid issues. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) help reduce menstrual blood loss. Progesterone can help correct hormonal imbalance and reduce menorrhagia. If drug therapy is unsuccessful you may need surgical treatment. ref:http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/menorrhagia/DS00394/DSECTION=treatments%2Dand%2Ddrugs
