leptospirosis

Asked by Unregistered (Male ) on Thu 26, Feb 2009 06:58am :

I am diagnosed with leptospirosis, but I am not able to establish the cause for it, as I have just come back to India after a long stay abroad. Advise me about my next steps that I should take with regard to diet and other precautions. Also, should i get a second opinion on this test already done earlier?

Answer by Dr. Malathesh K (doctor) on Thu 26, Feb 2009 09:38am:

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by a particular type of bacteria known as spirochete. It is transmitted by many animals such as rats, skunks, opossums, raccoons, foxes, and other vermin through contact with infected soil or water. You must take antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor, maintain good nutrition, hydration and hygiene (clean every vegetable and drink boiled water). Almost any organ can get affected and if your condition worsens please consult your GP.
