Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Thu 24, Jul 2008 01:11am:

Hi, Nicotine chewing gum is usually taken to overcome smoking addiction, although some people get addicted to the gum itself. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor it constricts the blood vessels and although the amount of nicotine in the gum is very low but still continued use over a long period of time can cause harm. Since your husband already has two risk factors for cardiovascular diseases like high BP and high cholesterol, chewing nicotine gum will only make it worse. Please try to convince your husband to break this habit. Do keep us posted!
