was I misdiagnosed or are the antibiotics not helping my uti infection?

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 38; USA; occasional uti's and yeast infections in the past. recently also diagnosed with BV.....given a one-dose
vaginal treatment for that; Relevant drugs:antibiotic diflucan )

I was just diagnosed with a uti and yeast infection this past Monday and was giving antibiotics for the uti. I started feeling better throughout the week, but then today noticed that the uti symptoms are returning.....sudden, burning urge to urinate, lower abdomen and back pain, white flakes in urine. I still have one more day of antibiotics.....can't figure out why these symptoms are persisting.

Hi, I think you are correct in thinking that the UTI symptoms have returned. This brings us to the fact that either the therapy needs revision or there is some other cause of the symptoms which is causing recurrent disorders. The first step is to get a urine culture and sensitivity test to find out the organisms which may be causing the infection. This may lead us to one or more causes of the disorder and thereafter, treat it with a targetted antimicrobial. The second approach would be to analyze the case for a recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis or other causes of pain in the lower abdomen. The white flakes may indicate yeast infection. The doctor also needs to confirm by examination and tests whether the infection is in the urinary tract or vaginal passage as there is a possibility of cross infection due to the anatomic arrangement. Please let me know if you may have any other queries.
