womens health question regarding midcycle heavy bleeding, heavy clotting

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 33; USA; generally healthy.....have 1 child born C-section ) on Sat 02, Aug 2008 12:22pm :

hello. I received my period normally two weeks ago. I am on BCP. I have not missed any pills. Last nite, I started bleeding heavily and with heavy clotting. I also have cramping and lower back pain. I have no reason to believe I may be pregnant bc I got my period normally two weeks ago. However, I am Rh negative so I am concerned I may have been pregnant and am miscarrying. I am trying to figure out if this can wait until monday to see to the doctor or if I need to go to the ER?

Answer by Dr Simran, MD (doctor) on Fri 08, Aug 2008 02:44am:

Hello nntallen, Metrorrhagia can be caused by a hormonal imbalance. Metrorrhagia can occur when hormone medications, such as birth control pills, are used improperly. Many causes of metrorrhagia are related to the cervix or uterus, including cancer, inflammation or infections, non-cancerous polyps ,scar tissue in the uterus ,and the growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus .Metrorrhagia can also be caused by miscarriage, a pregnancy that is developing in the fallopian tubes ,the use of an intrauterine device for birth control, or chronic medical problems such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, and blood-clotting disorders. You should consult a gynaecologist and get an ultrasonography done to diagnose the cause. Refer http://www.hmc.psu.edu/healthinfo/m/metrorrhagia.htm for more info. Best
